'What steps were taken to stop deepfakes? Was any committee formed on bomb threat?
Delhi High Court has expressed concern over the growing problem of deepfakes. The court said that this technology cannot be banned but steps should be taken to remove its negative aspects. The Central Government has been asked how deepfakes can be distinguished and what steps are being taken to overcome this problem.
During the hearing
on the petition related to deepfake, Delhi High Court said that the problem of
deepfake is continuously increasing. However, a bench of Chief Justice Manmohan
and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela said that this technology cannot be banned because
we need AI.
The court said
that we have to exclude the negative part associated with it and use the
positive part. The bench asked the Central Government how this can be resolved
and what steps are being taken to overcome this problem?
During the
hearing, the bench highlighted the increasing number of false bomb threats on
flights and asked whether the government has constituted any expert committee
and if so, who are its members? The bench said that the court wants clear
answers and it should be a serious committee.
The court
adjourned the hearing till November 21, directing the central government to
submit a status report on the case. During the hearing, senior advocate Darpan
Wadhwa, appearing for the petitioner, said that deepfake circulation is a big
problem and it is not limited to politicians.
He said that it is
beyond understanding how this mediator is? He informed the bench that the
government has issued an advisory of general nature asking websites to remove
deepfake content in 72 hours.
On this, the bench
asked whether the Central Government has established an in-house mechanism or
constituted any committee? If not, we will form a committee which will look
into it. The bench said that this is a problem which is arising on a daily
basis. This is a very important issue and should be taken seriously.
Senior lawyer
Darpan Wadhwa said that a year has passed since the petition was filed and the
government has not taken any steps. The bench adjourned the hearing while
directing the central government to submit a status report on the matter within
three weeks.
